Notes for my writing

This blog is made up of notes on the gospel as found in the only true and living church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This includes notes that are either excerpts from or ideas for books I either have in draft or may yet write.

They loved Satan more than God // False Christs

One thing that stands out in the beginning of the world is that we read of people loving Satan more than God. This was also clearly an issue in the premortal life, as Satan was able to get a third of the hosts of heaven to follow him in rebellion against the Father.

Moses 5:13 And Satan came among them, saying: I am also a son of God; and he commanded them, saying: Believe it not; and they believed it not, and they loved Satan more than God. And men began from that time forth to be carnal, sensual, and devilish.

Moses 5:18 And Cain loved Satan more than God. And Satan commanded him, saying: Make an offering unto the Lord.

Moses 5:28 And it came to pass that Cain took one of his brothers’ daughters to wife, and they loved Satan more than God.

We wonder how such a thing could be possible. How could a people love that being that seeks their destruction more than they love that God that loved them first.

But what we need to realized is that this is nothing new. In fact, this is precisely what we see happening in the world today.

Those people loved a being that opened a broad road for them. They loved a being that said that it didn't matter if they were honest, and particularly, doesn't matter whether or not they were chaste. They loved that being more than they loved a God that required faith, repentance, and obedience to commandments.

A matter of names

We live in a day when people still generally love Satan more than God. They would rather be immoral than moral. They would rather have indecency than decency. They would rather be able to do whatever they want, whenever they want, with whomever they want, then submit themselves to commandments and the scriptures.

But they do not call their God by the name Satan. It works far better to parade their God about as Jesus, or nature, or atheism, or whatever name they want for a God that will let them come as they are, and continue from there however they want.

When we read of the "false Christs" in the scriptures, we need to realize that the many false popularized versions of who Christ is, and what he requires of us, are exactly those prophesied false Christs. When it comes to the prophesied false Christs, we are immersed in the fulfillment of prophecy, while still waiting for it to come to pass.
